John 18 (Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus, Peter Denies Jesus, My Kingdom is Not of This World) Its always good to slow down when we read these familiar passages of Scripture. There are truths embedded in the story that are easily missed. Take, for example, the incident recorded in John 18:10. Peter draws his short fighting sword and slashes at the hostile crowd, cutting off the ear of the highs priests servant. Remember, Peter was a fisherman, not a soldier! He probably was aiming for something more substantial than an ear. Why do you think John mentions that the servants name was Malchus, and that it was his right ear? Normally when names are mentioned in passing, like Alexander and Rufus, the two sons of Simon of Cyrene, it is because they became Christians and would have been recognized by the Christian community. This would imply that Malchus probably became a believer, a follower of Jesus. Dr. Luke gives us an additional insight: Jesus said, No more of this! And He touched the mans ear and healed him. No wonder Malchus life was impacted by this confrontation and miraculous healing. Jesus was always looking for an opportunity to make people whole. Hell do that again with a thief dying next to Him on a cross. And He is still making people whole today! What a wonderful Savior is Jesus our Lord! What do you say, my brothers and sisters?
