Along with bonobos, chimpanzees, and gorillas, orangutans are remarkably similar to humans in terms of anatomy, physiology, and behavior. Like the other great apes, orangutans are highly intelligent, displaying advanced tool use and distinct cultural patterns in the wild. Orangutans share approximately 97% of their DNA with humans. Despite their protected status in both habitat countries, Malaysia and Indonesia, Sumatran populations are listed by IUCN as Critically Endangered while Bornean populations are Endangered. Both Sumatran and Bornean orangutans could become extinct in the wild as biologically viable populations within ten to twenty years.
