Jon Rathbun/GateHouse MediaLittle Falls senior running back Devin Dawley (23) has helped the Mounties turn their season around after an 0-2 start, and a fifth straight win Saturday would put them in first place in the NFF East Division. Ron Moshier Posted Oct. 13, 2014 @ 10:55 pm Updated Oct 13, 2014 at 11:05 PM Considering how it started, with 53-0 and 43-0 losses, their football season could have easily been a total loss. Instead, Little Falls’ Mounties – determined to prove they were better than that – have a four-game winning streak and a National Football Foundation (NFF) title in their sights. Little Falls, one of several local schools opting out of Section III playoff consideration in an effort to spark more interest in the football program, remained unbeaten in the NFF East Division with Saturday’s 45-20 victory over New York Mills. And this Saturday afternoon, the Mounties (2-0, 4-2) will be playing for the division lead when they travel to Boonville to meet Adirondack’s first-place Wildcats (3-0, 5-1). “Yeah, it wasn’t good, but we all pulled it together as a team,” Little Falls senior co-captain Devin Dawley said of the Mounties’ woeful start. “We were down 96-0, but we’ve definitely turned it around. Now, we’re looking forward to this shot at first place.” No, those 53-0 and 43-0 nonleague losses to Canastota and state-ranked, Class D neighbor Dolgeville couldn’t be forgotten. They were, however, put to good use. “Their attitude actually has been great; that’s been the biggest thing,” Little Falls head coach Bryan Shepardson said. “I can’t stress that enough. The attitude even got better (after those two losses), because these guys were just eager to get back out on the field and get better.” Playing in the NFF, no doubt, has helped. But with Dawley, a solid 5-foot-8, 155-pounder, shouldering much of the offensive load, the Mounties have gotten better. Dawley sat out most of the second half at New York Mills and still finished with 135 yards rushing and three touchdowns. He leads the team with 636 yards and nine touchdowns on 120 carries. Led by center Alan Chlus, tackles Nick LaCourse and Scott Worden, and guards Joe Mihevc, Dan Corbett and Keegan Connolly, Shepardson said the Mounties also have “really started to get it” up front, too. “That’s really been the difference, us being able to establish the run,” he said. “You could see it every week, our kids getting more and more confidence. They’re just having a great time playing football right now.” Junior Derek Raux is also coming of age. Last Saturday, he ran for one touchdown and was 5 of 8 passing for 139 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown to sophomore Todd Hubbell. Defensively, 225-pound junior end Andy Mucica led a pass rush that recorded five sacks and helped force five turnovers in the win over a New York Mills team whose spread offense seldom runs the football. » Comment or view comments Prev 1 2 Next » SUGGESTED STORIES High school football roundup, Friday, Oct. 24Utica, NY - The Observer-Dispatch, Utica, New York Two travel advisories issued for UticaUtica, NY - The Observer-Dispatch, Utica, New York High school cancels football season over bullyingUtica, NY - The Observer-Dispatch, Utica, New York Marcy man accused of choking teenage girlUtica, NY - The Observer-Dispatch, Utica, New York Section III Girls Soccer update: Oct. 21Utica, NY - The Observer-Dispatch, Utica, New York » FROM AROUND THE WEB American Idols Josh Gracin Leaves Apparent Suicide Note on FacebookPeople Concern and Anger After a Toddler Is KilledThe New York Times Kim Kardashian Leaves Little to the Imagination in Skintight Red Skirt, Grey Bodysuit for…Us Weekly Governor Introduces Telemedicine To MississippiPublic Sector View BREAKING: Dog Punching Fence Jumper Sends White House Into LockdownBlue Nation Review Recommended by QUIZ: Who Said It on Gotham?
