July or August 2014 Special Guest for NAFA monthly meet... Hi - TopicsExpress

July or August 2014 Special Guest for NAFA monthly meet... Hi Tony Chu and NAFA gang, When I was doing my undergrad at the University of Canberra, we were stumped by who to ask help host our end of year film awards night. In previous years, we had ABC TV alumni such as Adam Spencer and Race Around The World enfant terrible, John Safran. So, I bought the previous years ENCORE Directory for $20 (usually $135) and scoured the names of directors and actors and also asked our film society - the UC Union Film Production Society (now called UC Media Society) - who to ask. I stipulated they be Australian so it would be easier to get them (Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese were too many time zones away). We came up with 10 names and I personally wrote to each of their agents around six months before our end of year film awards night. Phillip Noyce and Peter Weir both said thank you for the invite but were busy with their projects. Baz Luhrmann never replied, nor did Jane Campion. David Wenham was interested but had a clash in the last minute. To our happy surprise, Breaker Morant, Driving Miss Daisy and the then up-coming film Double Jeopardy (grossing over $100 million worldwide) director Bruce Beresford, his wife Virginia and daughter Trilby drove from their home in Sydney to Canberra for a weekend in October to help host our film awards night (called FUCAS - Film University of Canberra Awards). I have kept in touch with Mr Beresford since then (read his book, Josh Hartnett Definitely Wants To Do This...true stories from a life in the screen trade 2007 Harper Collins) and he has always been generous with his time. Now, as per our conversation on Monday night 16th June 2014, would you like to have Bruce for our next months monthly meet or would you like someone else like Baz or actors like Cate Blanchett or my birthday-brother Hugh Jackman? You could look up their agents and do what I did or you can approach them directly if you know their contact details. My votes for the rest of 2014 include Russell Crowe, Rolf de Heer, Dr George Miller and Geoffrey Rush. If you ask, they may and if theyre not busy, like Bruce, say, yes!! Good luck!! Mel Avanzado
