June 4, 2014 John 19:1–5 (ESV) Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” Beating of the King This portion of Scripture, where Jesus is beaten, condemned, and then crucified, never ceases to amaze, anger, and convict me. It amazes me that the sinless and innocent Son of God is condemned for the crimes of others and that he willingly accepts the condemnation. This speaks volumes about Jesus. He knew his mission and was unwilling to avoid this most uncomfortable aspect of his mission. It angers me because of the mob rule that the Jews inspire and that Herod gives into. Finally, it condemns me because I would have been right there with the Jews and the crowd. I am quite certain I would not have been the one brave and righteous soul to stand tall and say, this is wrong! Jesus is innocent. Barabbas should be crucified! I am just a plain old ornery sinner like they were and am just as guilty. We have to recognize who we are before Jesus to appreciate the accomplishment of the cross, and the effect it should have in our lives. To truly appreciate the resurrection, we have to recognize our own sinfulness. We were each in the crowd that day.
