Just a thought about faith that came up today while driving to work. Maybe one reason faith is such a tenet of most religions is simply cognitive. Human intelligence is predictive intelligence -- not merely the ability to imagine an outcome, but to postulate from observation how to achieve that outcome. We routinely predict how a complex series of actions will produce a desired result. And from an evolutionary perspective, thats just weird. But to code that observe-imagine-predict-act-repeat-wait process into our behavior, we need patience and discipline. We have to trust that repeating an action that has no immediately discernible effect will eventually produce something that we want. And what if this process of turning imagination into success -- coming up with a plan and believing strongly enough that it will work that we stick to the plan even though the immediate sensory feedback we receive gives us zero reward for our actions -- is so ingrained in us that we build our religions around it? Because You gotta have faith isnt just a religious principle. Its meaningful absent religion.
