Just ahead of the kickoff to this years college football season, The Wall Street Journal published its fourth annual College Football Grid of Shame Thursday, ranking all 128 major college teams on and off the field. Each school was ranked on two criteria — where their on the field play lands on a powerhouse vs. weakling scale, and where their off the field actions land on a admirable vs. embarrassing scale. Ben Cohen of the Journal explains: The Grid is a way of sorting out which fans can boast about their team--on and/or off the field--and who should think again before gloating. The horizontal axis assesses on-field strength for this upcoming season...The better the team, the farther they are on the right. The vertical axis measures shame. This is trickier to quantify, of course, but there is data to help the cause. Syracuse University lands in the middle of the chart, ranking in the center of the powerhouse and weakling spectrum, but much more admirable than embarrassing. Florida State University and Alabama University are the biggest powerhouse programs, but The Journal rates both programs as embarrassing. The most embarrassing program though is Penn State University, still reeling from the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The University of North Carolina, which is currently dealing with hazing accusations, is the next most embarrassing. Stanford University is the charts big winner, ranking in the top tier of the powerhouse and admirable categories, followed by UCLA. The most admirable program is Northwestern University, with the University of Wisconsin not far behind. Some schools that rank as both embarrassing and weakling include Florida International University, Georgia State University and Idaho University.
