Just back from Prague & Karlovy Vary. Rehearsals (only 2!) & concert went well. Orchestra did exemplary work in a demanding (& long) program (putting up with my semi-literate rehearsal Czech), and the audience at Dvorak Hall was warm & enthusiastic (and they stayed the whole two-&-a-half hours, and were asking for more...). Photo on left is beginning of short acoustic rehearsal before the concert; and almost as importantly, photo on right shows the Bohemian crystal glassware and Czech liquers I was able to squeeze into my luggage... Stastny Novy Rok! (Happy New Year) [Also met with the conducting seminar at Prague Conservatory, in a wide-ranging discussion: Copland, Bernstein, Central European versus North American orchestras & orchestra life, value of urtexts and how to read (interpret?) them, importance of playing chamber music & playing in an orchestra, etc., etc.]
