Just got back from Desolation Wilderness with 12 year old Linnea. I knew it would be a tough hike (lots of elevation loss and gain at altitude). She had a rough time going in on Friday when her arches started hurting badly. It slowed us down enough that we spent the last 45 minutes hiking in the dark. She then took a tumble next to camp on Saturday and sprained an ankle. It hurt bad enough that she was holding back tears at times on the way out this morning. When we were finished and back at the truck, she limped into the passenger seat, smiled, and said "thanks Dad." She then spent a good portion of the trip home lecturing me on how NEXT time we go backpacking, we need to bring the dog. My daughter rocks!
