Eric Cantor and his political machine were shocked by losing a vote in his home county of Henrico on Monday night, giving further evidence of the surprise vulnerability of the re-election bid of the Majority Leader. Cantor’s campaign apparatus has focused on pushing all of their supporters to attend the Henrico Republican Mass Meeting Monday to pass a measure that would have sent only his supporters to his Congressional District Convention. Despite days of effort by Cantor’s campaign to get every supporter in his home county to the meeting, FEWER THAN 200 SHOWED UP TO SUPPORT CANTOR – including Mr. Cantor’s campaign manager and other paid personnel. Eric Cantor’s challenger Dave Brat made a late push to help stop the Cantor effort, sending out an email encouraging his supporters to attend the meeting and going to the meeting himself. Brat and his supporters turned out more voters than Cantor and won the vote, sending shockwaves across Virginia’s political landscape. The fact that Cantor was unable to win a vote in his home county against Brat adds to the growing momentum of a wide grassroots coalition for Brat’s campaign. Cantor’s inability to turn out even 200 votes to defeat Brat in his home county indicates that he will face a difficult uphill fight to retain his seat.
