Just had a very pleasant conversation with Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys. He was interviewed for The Vinyl Dialogues as the producer two of David Cassidys solo albums. I had sent Bruce an email about another topic, and in that email, I mentioned that I was hoping to get an interview with Art Garfunkel about his 1975 solo album Breakaway. On that album is a song, Disney Girls, written by Bruce Johnston. The song had been on the Beach Boys 1971 album Surfs Up. When he replied to my email, he casually asked if I would be interested in his recollections about the Garfunkel version of Disney Girls. Of course I said yes, because Ive interviewed Bruce in the past several times and hes a great storyteller. Bruce arranged the Garfunkel version - he said he was pretty much the same arrangement as the Beach Boys version - sang backup, played the piano and provided the whistle that was in the song because Art couldnt whistle. (By the way, Toni Tennille also sang backup on this song.) All very cool stuff. Now I just have to get Garfunkel on the phone, which hopefully will happen after the first of the year. Here is Art Garfunkels version of Bruce Johnstons song, Disney Girls. Absolutely beautiful. https://youtube/watch?v=1QBRwj3kzno
