Just in: A statement to the Gazette from Blue Mountains Police Commander Superintendent Darryl Jobson about todays incident at Huntley Grange Road, Springwood: About 6.30am this morning, a resident contacted Springwood Police expressing concern about a council type recycling bin on the roadway at Huntley Grange Road, Springwood. The resident was concerned about a smell coming from the recycling bin and indicated that they could also hear a ticking noise. A short time later, police attended the scene and conducted an assessment. Based on that assessment, the recycling bin was considered to be suspicious subject to being proved otherwise. Consequently, normal procedures were followed with a 100 metre exclusion zone implemented. A number of residents within that zone were moved from their homes for the duration of the operation. As per protocols, Police from the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit were called and examined the recycling bin which revealed some bottles which contained chemicals, remnants of a fire and a discarded smoke alarm which was emitting a beeping sequence. The operation concluded about 1pm with residents contacted for them to return when it was proved to be safe. Blue Mountains Local Area Commander Superintendent Darryl Jobson said I would particularly like to thank the residents for their co-operation and understanding and Springwood Golf Club, who opened their doors and assisted with one displaced resident.
