Just learned something super interesting in my trauma training.... The ACE study (an in-depth study of adverse childhood experiences and the likelihood of those children later needing DHHS services) started out as an obesity study! The doctor who started the study was originally doing research on obese individuals and gathering data on their childhood experiences to see if there were any significant trends. His findings (that the more ACE an individual had, the higher their likelihood of struggling with obesity) led him to expand his research to examine the relationship between these experiences and the future utilization of mental health, substance abuse, child protective services, and other DHHS services. Thought it was interesting that it started where it did and its now influencing trauma informed practice across our nation....
