Just plain wow! After having a conversation with another teacher about students and how we grade them, I can see clearly why so many students give up so easily. If they are lacking the needed help at home and on top of it the teacher is fail student happy, what hope does the student have? No wonder so many students feel they are doomed when it comes to education, because we have teachers who simply dont care to give that extra push and or encouragement, even if it means a tweak of a grade just to say, hey, I see you are trying. That tweak could actually affect the student where they would become more motivated to seek extra help. I say, Yes, strive for an A, give it your best, you may still come out with a D or F but at least you tried. I think it very much unrealistic for anyone to say a student simply is not trying because a grade is low or failing. It is just crazy to me. We as teachers cant not say definitively a student is just lazy or not trying, because what if that student is giving their all and still for whatever the reason, failing or falling short? Instead of the negative thoughts, why not as a teacher try to promote encouragement above and beyond what our job description entails?
