Just reminded of this one. I was auditioning for Mitzi at the Comedy Store to become a regular about 1981. Argus Hamilton was emcee. The set was going well. I told a Reagan joke which got big laughs, and suddenly Flip Wilson emerges from the back of the room, climbs over a chair and the rail stage right and gets on stage with me. Id never met the man, though he was my first comedy idol from when I was in elementary school. He and I improvised a 10 minute act to big laughs. Lots of it was about a divorce he was going through, as I recall. He finally leaves, and I said something to the effect of You know youre in trouble when celebrities are coming off the street to heckle you. I did another couple of minutes, the light came on, and I left to a great ovation. Argus was very gracious and said Thank God that was you and not me. You were great. Flip Wilson comes back over to me and says I never would have come up there if I didnt know you could handle it. He shakes my hand. Finally Mitzi calls me over and says, Youll have to reschedule. I really couldnt tell anything with Flip Wilson up there.
