Just tonight when I was working with the Diamond Elite 14U team I gave an example about why players should not slide headfirst. I came home and Im watching the SEC tournament where a Kentucky player slides headfirst into home plate. In all of sport theres probably not a dumber move than to slide into a six-foot athlete wearing equipment head to toe where your hands and head lead the slide. Oh he was safe, he wouldve been safe had he slid feetfirst and in a much safer position. But his head wasnt so safe. Not timing his slide perfectly he face planted his forehead into the Homeplate dirt. This allowed the television cameras an extended opportunity to get close-ups of the trainer mopping up the blood from his fore head in the dugout and the announcers the opportunity to describe what a foolish thing he did, on national TV. Tough guy? I dont think so. Stupid guy? I tend to believe it.
