KAKO NAROČITI KRUH “po slovensko”! How to order bread in Slovene is survival too, since almost every grocery store in Slovenia has a special “section”, called “kruh in pecivo” (bread and pastries), where you have to speak to a (nice) shop assistant and make an order. Well, you can’t do without some basic phrases in “pekarna” (bakery) too, that’s why let’s have a go at learning some essential vocabulary about the topic. The keywords are: - kruh (of course) = bread - bEli kruh = white bread - čRni kruh = brown bread - pOlbEli (-l read as -u)kruh = half-brown or half-white (?) - polnozRnati kruh = wholegrain bread - korUzni kruh = corn (maize) bread - pirin (stress on the first -i) kruh = spelt bread There is of course more, but let’s stop our list here ;-). Then, “kakO se rEče po slovEnsko” (How do you say in Slovene): - a loaf (of bread)? Po slovensko se reče “hlEb(ec)” and also “štrUca”. NOTE Hlebec is round, whereas štruca has an elongated form! - (bread) roll = žEmlja - baguette = francOska štrUca Last but not least, we need the expressions for the amounts: - cel = whole (entire) - pol (-l is pronounced as -u)= half - četRt = quarter NOTE! When ordering you have to say it like this: cel hleb / celo štruco, prosim pol hleba / pol štruce četrt hleba / četrt štruce (the complicated grammar ;-)!!!) Now we are ready to give it a try (Don’t forget the accusative when ordering!): - Dober dan. Prosim? - Dober dan. Koruzni kruh prosim, pol hleba. - Izvolite. Želite še kaj? - Ne, hvala, to je vse. (= No, thanks, that’s all.) OR Ja, in eno belo žemljo, prosim. (= And one white roll, please.) NOTE Don’t complicate, keep it simple! First say what kind of bread do you want and then add the amount. For example: Beli kruh, pol štruce, prosim. OR Pirin kruh, cel / četrt, prosim. It’s easy, isn’t it :-)! Srečno!
