KALA UTSAV - GUIDELINES FOR PARTICIPANTS • Youths between the ages of 7 – 25 years are eligible. • Only those who are successful at the Praant Kala Utsav will be allowed to participate in the final Utsav. • Participants at the Praant Utsav must achieve at least 50% before they would be allowed to appear at the finals in Georgetown. This would mean that even if there is only person in a category at the preliminary, that person must achieve 50% of the marks, there would be no automatic walkover. • Participants may perform in one or more categories. • First place winners of a specific category will not be allowed to participate in that particular category again. • The Judges decisions are final in all instances. CATEGORIES RAMAYAN CHANTING The Kaand selected is Sundar Kaand. The duration of this piece is 5 minutes. Within this time one chaupaiyee and doha should be chanted. 1 to 2 singers will be required to chant and a small group comprising of not more than 6 people will be required to dramatise or depict what is being chanted. The Hindi arth and a brief English translation after the dramatization and chanting will be required Score will be done as follows: VOICE CONTROL - 5 EMOTION - 5 PRONOUNCIATION - 5 POSTURE - 5 RYHTHM - 5 DRAMATIC PRESENTATION - 10 - costume, understanding and interpretation OVERALL PRESENTATION - 5 TOTAL – 40 SINGING KIRTAN - This category will require 6 or more singers who will sing kirtan for no more than 4minutes. The number excludes musicians. Only one trophy will be given per group as well as one cash prize. Each participant will receive a certificate. DUET singing – two females or two males, male and female; any genre allowed. TIME 3 mins Kirtan and Duet categories will be judged as follows VOICE CONTROL - 5 EMOTION - 5 PRONOUNCIATION - 5 POSTURE & PRESENTATION - 5 TIMING - 5 PITCH - 5 SYNCHRONY/HARMONY - 5 TOTAL – 35 Male/Female singing – open to males/females 7-25 years. Any genre of music. Time 3 mins. VOICE CONTROL - 5 EMOTION - 5 PRONOUNCIATION - 5 POSTURE & PRESENTATION - 5 TIMING - 5 PITCH - 5 TOTAL – 30 CLASSICAL GROUP DANCE This category will require 3 or more dancers ages 7-25 years to perform for not more than 3.5 minutes. Any classical style will be welcome; kathak, odissi, bharatnatyam etc. Only one trophy will be given per group as well as one cash prize. Each participant will receive a certificate This will be judged as follows: COSTUME - 5 FOOTWORK - 5 CLARITY OF MOVEMENTS - 5 INTERPRETATION & UNDERSTAING OF MUSIC - 15 EXPRESSION - 5 USAGE OF STAGE - 5 POSTURE - 5 OVERALL PRESENTATION - 5 TOTAL – 50 JUNIOR FOLK DANCE A minimum of 6 persons (ages 7- 14) can participate in this category. Folk styles include bhangra, rajasthani, Guyanese, Marathi etc. No music with vulgar lyrics will be allowed. Please ensure that no lewd or vulgar clothing and movements be used. Only one trophy will be given per group as well as one cash prize. Each participant will receive a certificate COSTUME - 5 INTERPRETATION OF MUSIC - 15 EXPRESSION - 10 USAGE OF STAGE - 5 COORDINATION - 5 ORIGINALITY - 5 OVERALL PRESENTATION - 5 TOTAL – 50
