KNOWLEDGE IS POWER: REMY & VIRGIN CHRONICLES Jun 20 Posted by precisionspeakles There is nothing worse than listening to a mouthful of WRONG. In an effort to thwart foolishness and ignorance from further permeating the hair world, here’s a lil’ nugget of knowledge: REMY is a descriptive term referring to human hair available for purchase that is sewn or hand-tied onto wefts (tracks), where the cuticle is left intact and aligned in the same direction- root-to-tip. Unidirectional cuticle, as it is referred to, allows for a more natural appearance and minimizes tangling and excess shedding. All remy hair is not virgin hair. I repeat, REMY DOES NOT MEAN VIRGIN. VIRGIN hair refers to that which no chemical processing has occurred; hair in its original state of growth. Virgin hair is offered in several varieties although the majority selections are Indian & Chinese. China & India are the two most populous countries in the world, subsequently accounting for the largest sources of virgin hair. I know a lot of you truly believe you are wearing AUTHENTIC 100% Brazilian hair in a 20, 22, 24″ for $175. However, it is my responsibility as your resident stylist to rescue you from reckless uninformed statements… For the sake of cartographers everywhere, take a moment to locate Brazil, China, and India on a world map. Though comparable in land size, the populations of these countries are far from close. It’s like comparing a corner store to Costco. Exaggeration, I know. Specifically, as of 2012, Brazil was inhabited by approximately 199M people. India boasted 1.2B residents and China had an overwhelming population of 1.35B. Given the vast disparity in population alone, one can infer virgin Brazilian hair is rare and more costly to source as opposed to it’s eastern extension counterparts. The greater the availability the lower the cost. Indian hair is a popular choice because its texture and color are easily matched to many ethnicities. Chinese hair offers great durability. South American, European, and other Asian hair varieties are also used in Remy hair production. When discussing harvesting donor hair single and double-drawn are applicable terms. SINGLE DRAWN hair is when hair is removed from the donor scalp by shaving the head. Shorter hair is removed leaving the longer hair in varying lengths similar in appearance to a natural ponytail. DOUBLE DRAWN hair, considered the finer of the methods, is removed in the same manner and also features the donor hair in almost exact lengths due to tedious sorting of hair strands. REMEMBER: - Remy refers to root-to-tip alignment. -Virgin and remy ARE NOT synonymous. -Most of the virgin hair available for purchase is either Indian or Chinese. - The rarity & availability of virgin hair are directly correlated with the cost to consumers. -Knowledge really is power!
