Karims Ramadan lessons DAY TWENTY FOUR Be kind to animals There once was a man who committed many terrible crimes. One day he was wandering through the dessert, dying of thirst, when he found a well and climbed down to drink. When he came back up he saw a dog, panting and clearly just as thirsty as he had been. So he climbed back down, filled his shoe with water and gave this to the dog. For his compassion, all his past sins were forgiven. There once was a woman who said all her prayers and had a good reputation for her charitable work. One day she locked a cat in a room and left it there to starve to death. For this act of cruelty all the good she had done became meaningless in the eyes of God. Did you think the call to compassion and mercy applies only to mankind? Far from it. Being cruel to an animal is just as evil es being cruel to a human being. We are not allowed to mistreat them or kill them for sport, and even when we kill them to eat there are strict rules on doing so quickly and not letting them see the knife so as not to frighten them with it. Respect the rights of animals in this world. Do not tread on their homes with arrogance leaving behind your trash that might harm them. Do not destroy their world in the name of greed and do not take away what is rightfully theirs. Allah gave us rights over them, but only in combination with responsibilities. So treat them with kindness and give them the respect that they deserve.
