Kathleen Wynn and the provincial Liberal Party has been saying that they plan on increasing the scope of all nurses to include ordering some tests and writing routine prescriptions so that we can fully utilize our education 1. Diagnosis and prescription fall outside of the scope of practice of nursing and I have never received any formal education in diagnosis and prescription. 2. Who is going to accept the medical-legal liability for the test an nurse orders or the prescriptions a nurse writes? 3. The obvious answers to the above are the nurse who orders the test or writes the prescription, which means well need significantly more practice insurance. 4. There has been no mention of any subsidy to cover the additional costs of liability insurance, additional education in diagnosis and prescription, or a significant pay raise to compensate for the additional responsibility and associated risk. 5. Inappropriately equipped healthcare providers acting beyond their education is a risk to patient safety, is a risk to the providers involved, the organizations they work for and their regulating body. In other words Premier Wynn, youre talking out of your ass. I neither asked for nor want the responsibilities you are proposing I should have. I am not interested in more responsibility for the same or less money, I am not interested in forced education that will limit my income, schedule or free time, especially if this will be an out of pocket expense to me and I am not interested in additional risk to myself, my patients, my hospital or my profession. If I wanted to diagnose and prescribe Id have gone to medical school or Id be a nurse-practitioner with a Masters Degree.
