Kauai Police have identified the 68-year-old man who died while hiking the Hanakapiai Trail on Friday afternoon as Edward Rishebarger of Spring Branch, Texas. Kauai firefighters were notified at 4:20 p.m. Friday of the hiker in distress. The hiker was roughly one mile from the Kee Beach trailhead when he began suffering a shortness of breath and eventually fainted. Bystanders performed CPR on the victim until rescuers arrived on scene and airlifted him to Princeville Airport. Awaiting medics then transported him to Samuel Mahelona Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Foul play is not suspected in Rishebargers death. According to police, the man had an existing heart condition and is believed to have suffered a heart attack. Volunteers with Lifes Bridges, a grief counseling service, and representatives from the Kauai Visitors Bureau is assisting the victims family.
