Kelsi Letter - July 7, 2013 - Abridged The mosquitos have been an absolute plague out here but miraculously have begun to disappear this week. We hear from the veterans that they should all die off by late July. Can’t wait! Our most recent weekend venture was to Isberg, Red Devil Lake, Washburn, with a few miscellaneous creeks and peaks in between. We also climbed Simmons Peak (and its unexpected glacier), and Lake Ireland. Amelia Earhart hung out at Lake Ireland, which looks very much like what I imagine the country of Ireland would look like. May be the prettiest place we have yet been. Bernice Lake and misc. in-betweens - all beautiful. Tonight we had a food/culture class and had a few minutes to write about a meal that came to mind from our homes. Instantly my mind went to a bustling back porch filled with people, a potluck of various dishes including shrimp tarragon, and all the seat labeling, pool splashing, and food-passing goodness that accompanies. Sorry for not getting any cards out lately. I injured my right hand moving a really big rock down a steep slope. No worries - just sprained & much better now. I send you all my love! It’s probably best not to send hugs - only creek baths, no soap, no shaving, wearing the same two uniforms and a handful of changes of clothes washed in the same manner as I, getting grossly sweaty & dirty daily. By the way, I have become infamous for growing a daily dirt mustache. Not sure how ...must have to do with how I sweat. Also, we have initiated “Mustache Mondays” where all who don’t already have one wear a fake mustache on the grade for the day. It’s quite the conversation piece with hikers passing by. We began a new phase today in our work, moving from trail maintenance to “rock work” - building ip sections of trail with various forms of rock-laying to prevent erosion due to water, mules, hikers, etc. It’s tedious, takes a lot of planning, patience, communication, sweat, double-jacking & moving rocks. We’re all pretty excited for the change of pace though.
