Khanya College: Interns Closing date: Friday, June 28, 2013 Khanya College is an independent and social justice non-governmental organisation that assists various constituencies within working class and poor communities to respond to the challenges posed by the forces of economic and political globalisation. Khanya College seeks to appoint Interns, in various aspects of its work, based in Johannesburg. Duration: One year Starting date: By mutual agreement with the College Khanya College encourages graduates and postgraduate students to apply as well as candidates with experience in working in the social justice movement even if they do not have any formal qualifications. Responsibilities: The Internship programme of the College is based on the principle of all-round exposure of the Interns to all the aspects of the work of the College. While candidates may have particular areas of interests and specific areas of training, the College’s approach is to deploy the Interns in all areas of its work. Administrative duties: Filing, reception duty; Data capturing; Administration support for various projects; Cleaning when necessary; Support functions for members of staff. Organising: Fieldwork in various projects; Organising meetings; Organising transport for community delegates to various events; Supporting the events department. Education, reading, writing and learning: Participate in political and civic education programme both within and outside the College: participation in study groups; participation in reading and writing programmes; promoting a culture of reading and writing; participation in debates and discussion on current developments in the country. Requirements: Interest and commitment to social justice in the South African and global contexts; Experience in social justice work in various environments will be an advantage; Basic skills and/or experience in the various areas of interest listed below; Relevant qualification at either tertiary or other levels; Experience in organising in a social justice milieu. The Khanya Internship programme includes structured mentorship and support for Interns, and extensive exposure to the social justice and NGOs, CBOs and social movements sector. In particular, the environment at Khanya College offers Interns the following: Vibrant and progressive working environment; Working relationships with diverse communities and other NGOs, museums, research organisations, locally, regionally and internationally; Contacts with various institutions that may support career development options into research, writing, ICTs, legal support for working class communities, organising for social justice, programme management work, publishing, and others; Diverse exchange with the public and partnering stakeholders through a wide range of educational and activities and cooperation projects of the College; The possibility of employment in the College on a full-time basis after the Internship. The College’s internship programme also provides space for Interns to pursue their specific areas of interest, to use their training and enhance their skills, and to contribute to the development of the College and the social justice movement in general through the use of their training in educational institutions or in other organisations of civil society. The following areas of interest will be considered when Interns are engaged: Publishing; Editing or sub-editing; Information technology: networking, web design and programming; Layout and graphic design; Financial administration; Project administration; Marketing, promotion and distribution; Research; Heritage and museum work.
