Khawla and the “Beast” Khawla’s story broke last week when a brutal photo of her spread on social media. Khawla (17 years old) suffered deep wounds in her face and body after her attacker slashed her with a knife. It took 30 stiches to close her wounds. Her assailant was not a stranger, he was her husband. This is not the first time Khawla has suffered at her husband’s hands. Their marriage only took place because he raped her. Rape can destroy a Moroccan girl’s chances of marriage. Until recently the country’s family law allows the rapist of a minor to avoid punishment and hush up the scandal by marrying his victim. The husband was sentenced to 6 months in prison for the assault. But despite all the pain, Khawla is fighting to have her husband freed. She threatened to kill herself if he is not released from gaol. Public opinion is on Khawla’s side and a heated discussion is going on in Morocco.
