Khuswant Singh – literary Icon and a great human being. He wrote his epitaph in his life, which reads as here lies one who spared neither a man nor God, Waste not your tears on him. He was a sod, writing nasty things he regarded as a great fun, Thank lord, he is dead, this son of a gun. The great literary icon, promoter of human love and preaching humankind through his spoken words and writings, the son of sub continent, Khuswant Singh breathed his last at the age of 95 in the early hours of Thursday. As usual, when I opened my FB page, saw the update from Zarmeena Baloch, unveiling this sad news. I am the one who ever read him with the core of my heart and immense love. To me Khuswant and Cowasjje were not the people, calling a spade a spade, never succumbed to any pressure nor were saleable commodities. Both were having their own class and versatility. When Golden temple was attacked through operation blue star resulting in the killing of General Singh bhindrawala, It was Khuswant who rancored and called it an attack on Sikh religion. He never awaited a moment and returned highly elevated padma Bhoshan award, the second highest civilian award in India. A liberal by birth, Khuswant was not at a pinch to scorn the BJP policies and horrendous attitude towards Muslims. During one of his interview he even went on to say that though I am a born Sikh but I am a multi religious person, a Sikh, a Hindu, a Muslim, christen, a Jew and a Zoroaster and follower of any such Philosophy which promote fraternity and brotherhood . He was a human being with broad vision of accommodation, live and let others live. He was never behind in criticizing lal kirshan advani. He called him a zealot of extremism by birth. On the discretion of Babri Mosque, Khuswant saw the fickle Hindu fanaticism clubbed with their Hindu aficionado. Turning to his posture as literary figure, Khuswant has his own chronology. He summed up his total literary worth in his last book which he wrote from the age of 91 to 93 titling malice to one and all. Besides this renowned writing work train to Pakistan he mourns the state of affairs which brought human genocide., In his autobiography truth, love and little malice, Khuswant recalls Lahore, Anarkalli and govt college Lahore as its mother’s tummy, groomed him in making a complete person. After migration to India, Khuswant maintained same allure for Lahore and lahorities. Educated in law, ascended as diplomat, saw new horizons as a successful editor, the stream of popularity that Khuswant attained were his witty and stylish writings. From 19950 Khuswant appeared as a prolific writer with his magnum opus. His famous books included the mark of Vishnu and just three years later, he also published Sikh history, both these books were purely related to religious affiliation but never shown any fanatic and fundamentalist approach. It was golden era of his writings,. If anybody wants to understand Khuswant, they should read his women and men in my life published in 1995. This is a book which reflect him genuine human being. His love, hate and adore accompanied with his humor and funniness. His departure is an end to the life of an ambassador of brotherhood, peace loving personality but his stature as literary figure is having more height then Himalaya. He was a gigantic personality of sub continent. His departure needs to be equally mourned in India and Pakistan. I condole with his family including son Rahul, Daughter Malhan and his niece actress Amarta Singh on the sad departure of this icon of love. PS I haven’t read the condolence messages from the President and Prime minster of Pakistan. If they are short, probably they are unaware of history and world intellectualism. See, the weight of Person, his work, contribution and his being ambassador of India Pakistan friendship
