Kia ora Merfriends, if you are in a position to help out NZs Maui dolphins please help us out. Thank you kindly. Below is a letter from Dr Barbara Maas. Barbara has been fighting for these last 50 dolphins in NZ tirelessly. And while her letter doesnt surprise me that our NZ govt took no real action here, I am saddened by our Governments lack of action. Lets take them to court New Zealand and the World. Read below to help. Dear Dolphin Friend The New Zealand government has just announced a decision that has doomed the last 50 Mauis dolphins to extinction. Instead of protecting the worlds rarest dolphin species, New Zealand has chosen to protect the commercial interests of its fishing industry. Rather of fully protecting the dolphins home, the government has added a very small extension to existing protected areas, which will do nothing to stop their decline. In doing so, the New Zealand government has ignored urgent calls by the international scientific community, including the International Whaling Commission (IWC), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the 2000 experts of the Society for Marine Mammalogy (SMM) who provided the strongest possible recommendations that Mauis dolphins can only be saved if the fishing nets that kill them are removed from their home. It has also ignored the opinion of almost 100,000 people - including yours - who have called for the dolphins immediate and full protection throughout their habitat through petitions, e-mails or formal submissions as part of government consultations. Maui‘s dolphins are not doomed to extinction. If human induced mortality is removed, they can still bounce back. But they need help now because saving them is a race against time! Despite this bitterly disappointing setback, we simply cannot give up on New Zealands forgotten dolphins, but UNLESS WE CHANGE THIS DECISION, MAUIS DOLPHINS WILL BECOME EXTINCT IN A MATTER OF YEARS. This is why we have set up a MAUIS DOLPHIN LEGAL DEFENCE FUND (gofundme/Mauis-Dolphin-LDF) that will enable us to challenge the government in court over its failure to protect the dolphins against continued decline. We believe that yesterdays decision is not based on the best available science, as is required by law, and that there are a number of significant procedural problems in how it was reached. You can help to give Mauis dolphins a chance against extinction by making a donation to our Mauis Dolphin Legal Defence Fund now! gofundme/Mauis-Dolphin-LDF WE ARE THEIR FINAL CHANCE, but without your support we simply dont have the funds to proceed with our plans. If we all chip in, well reach our target and can overturn this terrible decision. Every Dollar, Euro or Pound will get us closer to their survival, so please make an early Christmas present to the Mauis dolphins today! gofundme/Mauis-Dolphin-LDF Thank you!
