Kinesio Taping You sometimes see athletes walking around looking like a Salvador Dali painting with the amount of brightly coloured, patterned tape all over them. To some this looks quite cool, different and interesting but does it actual have any benefit to preventing and/or treating musculoskeletal injuries? Mostafavifar et al 2012 published a systematic review looking into the effectiveness of kinesio taping for musculokeletal injury. Randomised controlled trials, cohort studies and case control studies were all used to investigate the kinesio tape. Various conditions were included from shoulder, back and neck pain. A wide range of age groups were included, 20-56 years old. 6 studies were used with 254 participants. These results were highlighted: 1) Lower extremity injuries, Kinesio taping did not improve outcomes. 2) For back injury there was no difference found between groups who were using the tape and those who didn’t. 3) For shoulder injury participants reported short term benefits. The authors concluded that there was insufficient evidence at present for or against the use of Kinesio taping after an musculoskeletal injury however in the short term the patient may perceive a benefit of using the tape. The power of placebo seems to be at play here until further evidence of any positive effect can be drawn.
