Kingston Police Warn Against Online Classified Ad Scams The Kingston Police Fraud Unit is advising the public to always exercise caution when responding to classified ads posted on-line. In particular, the Fraud Unit has had several occurrences in which the scammers pretended to be members of the Canadian Forces being posted out of the country who were selling their vehicles. The scammers then convince the potential buyers to send money in advance, either by bank wire transfer or a money transfer agent such as Western Union or MoneyGram. Scammers will also pretend at times to use an established third party to hold the money until delivery. In such cases, consumers should verify that the e-mail address provided for electronic transfers or the bank information provided for wire transfers actually belong to a legitimate service entity. Police caution consumers against sending money to strangers before receiving an item or being able to confirm that it actually exists. Emails alone, even if they contain attachments of purported ownership documents or photographs of the item for sale, should not be relied upon. #fraud
