Kyu Bon starts today in Okinawa (as well as some areas in the northern parts of the Kanto region). This celebration takes place around the 15th day of the seventh month according to the lunar calendar, unlike Obon that is celebrated in other parts of Japan which is in line with the Gregorian calendar. This three day celebration has a strong focus on celebrating the life of ancestors who have passed away and welcoming their spirits back into the home to reunite with the family. Unkeh, the first day of celebration, is the time when families all gather. Various items such as fruit, tea, sake and sugar cane are arranged on the altar for the visiting spirits. Candles may also be lit to welcome the spirits of returning ancestors. You will also see Eisa, a dance unique to Okinawa, performed everywhere in the streets and throughout neighborhoods.
