LAGOS MOVES TO CONTROL INFECTION IN HEALTH FACILITIES Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Public Health, Dr. Yewande Adeshina has urged health facilities operators and health care service providers in the state to put all hands on deck to prevent and control infection in our health facilities while also improving their service delivery to the citizenry. Adeshina, who stated this recently at the seventh HEFAMAA stakeholders’ meeting with health facilities operators and health service providers in Lagos noted that there is need to put in place a mechanism that will ensure holistic prevention and control of infections from one patient to another. She noted that Infection Prevention Control (IPC) is the engine box behind a successful healthcare delivery system which requires that procedures or guidelines to prevent and control infections in health facilities must be put in place and adhere to at all times. Dr Adeshina opined that the agency is solidly behind making the relationship between the government as a regulator and healthcare providers as operators work as collaborative partners in providing quality health care services to the citizenry, stressing that the Agency is out to help health facilities improve on the delivery of their services to the populace. The Special Adviser added that the stakeholders meeting provides an avenue to get first hand feedback from health care providers and health facilities operators on how the operation and activities of the agency is perceived as well as serve as an eye opener to see how many health providers are in the dark as to what the roles of HEFAMAA are and how grey issues concerning its activities can be addressed. “Suffice it to say that this meeting gives room for a lot of comments and questions which are encouraging. It was really an eye opener to see how many providers were in the dark as to what the roles of HEFAMAA are and how and why we established HEFAMMA. We will continue to encourage this interactive session beyond today”, She said. On medical waste disposal, Adeshina noted that HEFAMAA as an agency of government collaborates with relevant agency like the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to ensure proper handling and disposal of medical waste, stressing that what LAWMA charges health facilities for medical disposal is strictly in the purview of LAWMA. Earlier, the Chairman of the Agency, Dr. Tayo Bello, highlighted and re-emphasized the roles of HEFAMMAA to include monitoring and accreditation to ensure that health care providers meet certain requirement in the provision of qualitative care. According to him, “we design our monitoring role to ensure continuous improvement in health facilities operations. We give room for improvement in as much as we encourage a highly professional ethics in the course of providing quality healthcare services”.
