LAGOS TO CREATE BEACH RESORT IN ILASE The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Tourism and Intergovernmental Relations, has commenced the creation of a resort at Ilashe in line with the present administration’s commitment to establish new destination centres with emphasis on highlighting the state’s natural aquatic endowments. Mr. Disun Holloway, Commissioner for Tourism and Intergovernmental Relations, who disclosed this today at the 2014 Ministerial Press Briefing to commemorate the 7th Year in Office of Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN), at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, stated that the beach resort will be on a parcel of land measuring 13.4 hectares and located in the Ilashe Peninsula which is between Tarkwa Bay and Badagry. According to him, “It is believed that the Ilashe Resort will upon completion become an international conferencing center, a location for domestic workshops and retreats during the week and an ideal getaway spot for Lagosians during the weekend”. The Commissioner explained that the present administration firmly believes in the vision of achieving a sustainable city that is business and tourism friendly, adding that the government focus is to provide an enabling environment for the necessary growth of tourism and tourist attractions centres in the State. He noted that in furtherance of the government’s commitment to boost tourism while encouraging creativity and consequently creating job opportunities, the Ministry has in the past one year embarked on people oriented and purpose driven projects to make the State a preferred tourist destination. The Commissioner revealed that some of the projects and programmes embarked on include the Lagos Heritage Week, Publication of “LAGOS: A VISITOR’S GUIDE”, Badagry Tourism Development Project, The creation of ILASE Beach Resort and the Classification and Grading of Hospitality Establishments to improve services in the industry. On the Lagos Heritage Week, he said the State sees the celebration of traditional and cultural festivals as a platform for promoting the way of lives of Lagosians while at the same time encouraging the commercial and economic activities that accompany such events. According to him, “since the inception of this Administration, the State Government has supported culture through the promotion of festivals during various times of the year, prominent among these is the Lagos Heritage Week, which was successfully hosted between 14th and 21st April 2014 in several locations across the State”. Mr. Disun Holloway further stated that the collective aspiration of the present administration to develop additional tourist destinations has driven its partnership with organizations such as the Nigerian Conservation Foundation. This partnership, he noted, has led to the development of a family park within the Lekki Conservation Centre, stressing that the Centre is a nature reserve on the Lekki Peninsula in Eti-Osa Local Government of the State and boasts of the original vegetation found in that axis. He added that Government’s decision to partner with the Foundation arose due to concern over low patronage and the desire to upgrade facilities at the conservation centre and in essence create a theme park of international standard and repute.
