LEFTY GROVE DAY The Allegany County Commissioners, Michael W. McKay, Creade V. Brodie, Jr., and William R. Valentine, will publicly recognize the late Lefty Grove, the Lonaconing native who became a baseball legend in his own time. The Commissioners will proclaim the opening day of the 2014 baseball season, Monday, March 31 as Lefty Grove Day in Allegany County. This will begin a new tradition in our community. The County Commissioners intend to recognize individuals with ties to Allegany County who have contributed to this national pastime on the opening day of future baseball seasons. Lefty Grove, a left-handed pitcher known for his “blazing fastball,” is the first person to be recognized. His baseball career is legendary. A sports writer is credited with this statement: Lefty was so fast he could “throw a lamb chop past a wolf.” His career statistics speak for themselves: 300 wins, 141 losses. Lefty Grove won the Baseball Writer’s Association’s first American League Most Valuable Player Award. Grove was selected to play in the first All Star Game. Grove is a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. This recognition will be during the public business meeting on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. at the Allegany County Government Office Building, 701 Kelly Road – Room 100, Cumberland. The general public is invited to attend.
