LOOK AWAY IF YOURE NOT IN TO GARDENING... I put the purple yam (Dioscorea alata) and purple sweet potato in the ground yesterday! What a triumph of a de-conditioned body. It was a lot of hoe-ing, but I got there in the end, just shy of a heart attack. I first sprouted them in damp coir in an earthenware crock so theyre guaranteed to go off. The Broad Beans are supplying us with heaps of fat pods now. I just put them in without any fuss, and theyre off! The double pot method of striking pelargoniums (geraniums to anyone still caught up in a long-standing error) is excellent. It affords perfect drainage and to inspect for root development just slide the inner pot out for a peek. Perfect! I saw this on the internet, so cant take the credit for this great idea. The Polyscias fruticosa (with spicy-fragrant leaves when dried) and little red hibiscus are my souvenirs from Brisbane last year. They dont like Sydney, so they need their little Tim Tams too. The Hibiscus is gorgeous - I havent seen this particular form in Sydney; its rather petit and the lacy petals curl under. When it gets going I can strike slips for you. The Euphorbia I decided to prune into a bonsai shape, which looks great, I think. Very stately and stand-alone. Thank you rain. Thank you sunshine. Thank you earthworms. Peace and Tim Tams.
