Jim Medal of Honor honoree will speak at Tilton veterans home By DAN SEUFERT Union Leader Correspondent President Barack Obama awards Staff Sgt. Ryan Pitts with the Medal of Honor at a White House ceremony on July 21. (REUTERS) TILTON — Former U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Ryan M. Pitts, the Medal of Honor winner for bravery in the face of an attack from the Taliban during an attack on his unit while serving in Afghanistan, will be the Veterans Day speaker at the New Hampshire Veterans Home’s ceremony. The home asked the Nashua native to be its speaker on Nov. 10, the day before the country officially honors all of its veterans, and was pleased that he agreed to speak, said the home’s spokesman, Leonard Stuart. “We were very pleased when he said yes,” Stuart said. “He’s a true hero.” The veteran’s home honors its residents a day early so that they can attend the Nov. 11 ceremony at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery, Stuart said. Pitts, a 2003 graduate of Souhegan High School, was a member of the 173rd, 2-503 Airborne in eastern Afghanistan’s Kunar province during the Battle of Wanat, said to be one of the fiercest battles during the war in Afghanistan. His unit was nicknamed “The Chosen Few.” Nine American soldiers died and more than 25 others, including Pitts, were seriously injured when they were forced to defend themselves against gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades launched by 200 Taliban insurgents on July 13, 2008. Pitts, a former active-duty Army staff sergeant who now works at Oracle Corp. in Burlington, Mass., was hit with shrapnel in both legs and an arm as machine gun fire and grenades continued to pound his team. Severely injured and unable to stand, Pitts pulled himself up on his knees to maneuver a machine gun. He repeatedly removed pins from grenades and launched them at the enemy while working the radio system to help target air strikes and turn the battle around. On July 21, during a ceremony at the White House, President Barack Obama said Pitts is a true American hero. “Against that onslaught, one American held the line,” said Obama, describing Pitts’ actions during the attack. “... In Ryan Pitts, you see the humility and the loyalty that define America’s men and women in uniform.” Pitts is the ninth living recipient to be awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan. The Medal of Honor recognizes members of the Armed Forces who distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry above and beyond the call of duty while engaging in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force. Pitts’ awards and decorations include the Medal of Honor, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, an Army Commendation Medal with three bronze oak leaf clusters, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation Jim Constantin VETERANS ADVOCATE USTA NH Mens Coordinator NH ROLLING THUNDER (R) INC.CHAPTER 1 CVMA NH 5-1 NH PATRIOT GUARD RIDERS RIDE CAPTAIN WE WILL NEVER FORGET
