Ladies especially READ THIS!!! :D Myth Number 3: I want to tone my body.... Firstly there is no such thing as toning a muscle. They either grow (hypertrophy) or shrink (atrophy). The definition of a muscle or how toned it looks depends on the size of the muscle and the body fat levels of the specific individual. ....... Going slightly off track....Basically ladies, if you start weight training along side an eating regime that is designed to help your muscles grow, you will initially, almost definitely put on weight (screams!!!). However you will look far better at a heavier weight as you would have increased your muscle mass. Once you have gained enough muscle you can reduce body fat levels (which will also lower your overall body weight) and have that toned look waiting underneath!
