Language Barrier Story: My friend Stacy and I live together. Me being from MD and her being from Lowell MA which is just north of Boston, we dont always understand each other. Today I have 2 stories about how the Baltimore transplant and The Boston Native can sometimes misunderstand each other. Story one: I was at work several month ago coming back from a job. One of the women in the van was very upset we had finished late and kept saying I have to get home so I can go to Dots. she said this repeatedly during the hour + drive from wherever we were that day. As she repeated herself, I was thinking... Wow, Dot must be really important. Its sad this little old lady must be waiting for her to stop by. Having worked in a nursing home, i know old people are often lonely and thought what a great thing this woman is doing by hanging out with this little old lady. A few weeks later, I was telling the story to the womans daughter in law who looked at me kind of blank. She then stated, Anna, Dot is not a person. She wanted to go to the bar and play darts. I was taken aback... the entire time i heard Dots she was saying Darts Well that just changed everything. So i go home and tell my roommate stacy this story. When i told her Yeah and the whole time she was saying darts!, stacy just looked at me blankly and asked Yeah what did you think she was saying? I returned her look and responded with Dots... like some little old lady named Dot! She laughed at me and replied Oh! I was wondering why you said this was a funny story. Story Two: Stacy and I were watching TV one night when for some reason the Tsungas Arena came up in conversations. I asked Isnt the Tsungas Arena in Saugus? Stacy looked at me confused and replied Why would it be in Saugas? I suddenly became confused by her question... Why wouldnt the Saugas Arena be in Saugas? She blinked then shook her head. Anna its the T-Sungas... Tsungas... T-S-U-N-G-A-S not Saugas... Really? i gasped at this bit of information. You mean for 15 years I thought that place was in Saugas and no one told me? Talk about feeling like the dumb kid...
