Lao Tzu says, Everyone agrees the way of goodness I describe is - TopicsExpress

Lao Tzu says, Everyone agrees the way of goodness I describe is great, but that it seems to have little practical value. Surely it is great because it seems to have so little practical value. And it is better that it does not, because if it were practically valuable, it would not endure, and would have been forgotten long ago. I do, however, keep three treasures, which have immense practical value, and which are always being forgotten and lost on account of that practical value: compassion, economy, and humility. From compassion comes courage, from economy comes generosity, from humility comes leadership. Because they are so practical, men forget that they must be compassionate to be brave, they try to be generous while abandoning economy, and they do not at all believe in humility. Pride is indeed a way of death. But they do not care for these things, that is why they set them aside: they do not value courage, generosity or leadership, though compassion would bring them victory in battle and strength in defense. Compassion is the means by which we are saved, and protected.
