Last Monday, on WHO Radio, Jan Mickelson pointed out that there are a large number of Africans from countries like the Congo, Nigeria and Togo settling in the Cedar Rapids area and working at Whirlpool. I dont know how much they get paid or the politics of how they ended up here. What I do know is this, these are legal immigrants and a number of them are Christians and share my faith. Over the last year or so, a number of them have ended up at my church. I am as big an immigration hawk as anybody (I was a Tancredo supporter before he went crazy and started pitching the National Popular Vote) but I want to be careful that my immigration position does not become xenophobia. As a Christian and a leader in my church, I feel a personal calling to minister to these brothers and sisters in Christ. As a (sort of) French speaker I have an automatic connection with many of these folks. I am not talking about a formal ministry or program but I feel that God has placed me here at this time to befriend and minister to these brothers and sister in Christ. Today, I went to lunch and had a great time of fellowship with a family from Togo. Pray for me as I seek to discover how God wants to use me in this ministry!
