Last month, Smithsonian Folkways Director Daniel Sheehy, Sound Production Supervisor Pete Reiniger, and Media Director Charlie Weber traveled to California’s San Joaquin Valley to record musician, songwriter, community activist, and El Teatro Campesino co-founder Agustín Lira and his trio, Alma. The eventual album (release date TBA) will include songs that were part of the farm workers’ struggle in the 1960s and 1970s for better wages and decent working conditions. To learn more about the tasks and challenges of work in the fields, they visited grape vineyards early one morning to interview several farm workers trimming grapevines around the town of Madera. Stay tuned for more announcements about this latest addition to the Smithsonian Folkways Tradiciones / Traditions series.
