Last night I saw a family of 7 just like us. They were eating at Cracker Barrel and were totally oblivious to my presence. I observed the dad helping the mom, playing with the baby, sharing bits of food, and holding daddy conversations with the other children. The mom was able to eat in peace while doing what moms normally do to help their kids at the dinner table. A well-behaved family to say the least. I remembered us splurging when the kids were young sometimes--we couldnt afford Cracker Barrel--but we did it anyway so our kids could know the luxury (and so I didnt have to cook). It was tough balancing the funds. It was a guilty feeling to eat out and yet a sigh of relief. I would observe the older couples sitting around us and think, How I wish we were set like them. I wouldnt have to worry about how much our dinner costs tonight. They could easily afford to pay our $80 bill. Most times though, they would come to our table, compliment our well-behaved children and our parenting skills, and leave without kindly switching dinner tickets. So last night it dawned on me, Jim and I are the older couple now. Oh, we still have all the kids at home, and balancing funds is at a whole new level and a different kind of worry, but this night our kids were off doing their own thing. This night, I didnt have the normal $80 dinner ticket. So, as the little guy toddled past my table, I reached in my purse, took out the last of my cash-enough for 3/4 meals, and stuck it in the mammas hand. I said, Please dont be offended but I want you to take this towards your meal, and I told her the same story Im telling you. She was happy. She was appreciative. She was blessed. Listen! If you wait to be in perfect financial shape before blessing others, you will never develop the habit. You will never bless, and will rarely be blessed! Random acts of kindness, pay it forward, compliments of the season...these are not new concepts. They just need revived! And Im hoping to encourage someone to start reviving the habit of giving today. It doesnt have to be extravagant, it can be buying a strangers $3 sweats for them in the Goodwill line. Its still a blessing! So lets have a revival. And remember, we are blessed to bless!
