Last night I went to a Metallica concert as an anthropological field trip. We arrived just after the opening act, Alice in Chains, went on. I havent been a huge fan of heavy metal for many years but this morning I have many joyous aches from bashing around in the mosh pit for hours like a teenager. The uniform of choice was jeans and a black t-shirt advertising like a whos who of heavy metal bands -- Metallica (of course), Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeath, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Holocaust, Suicidal Tendencies, Def Leppard ... Black leather jackets, belts with spikes, fierce tattoos, long hair, partially shaved heads, mohawks, green hair, magenta hair, greying and balding heads ... Smiling faces all around, we were there for one reason, we were there to rock. The stage was massive and lit with over 120 large lights hung in a grid over the production. Twenty or so large lasers added to the show, while the back of the stage was hung with over a dozen six-story high LED monitors. The stadium sound was huge, easily cutting through my ear plugs. Metallica started playing and from the first chord it was on. Two hours into the show a heavy rain started falling. Large cold drops providing some relief but quickly soaking anyone who wasnt under a roof. Nobody seemed to care, and the falling water only added depth to the stage effects. The lightning was a nice effect and the thunder barely heard over the speaker arrays as we all continued to mosh around to songs I had not listened to in years. Eventually we headed home, soaking wet, cold and happy. When we arrived home there was spicy green curry waiting for us and I slept hard shortly after eating dinner. What a day. What a night. What a win.
