Last night we went to a restaurant in Shibuya/Tokyo. We sat at the bar and had excellent service. Our bartender/waiter was so awesome but only spoke what I am beginning to call Menu English (They know enough to explain the menu but no other. It gives you a false sense of security so you start speaking more to them and then they get that blank confused look and just smile and shake their head a bit helplessly. I recognize this look because I wear it almost constantly here.) I wanted to tell our waiter how much I appreciated his service but when I tried he could not understand so I asked for the manager (who spoke some English) to help me. I felt a little bad because it scared my waiter when I asked for the manager but knew it would be all better when I had an interpreter. When the manager came I asked if he spoke English and he said a little. So, I explained to him that the service was excellent and I wanted to be able to thank the waiter. The manager said wait here, so I assumed he did not understand me and was going to get someone else to help. But, he came back with a little award for the waiter and gave it to me to present to him! I was so happy and so was the waiter. His face lit up! It was a very happy experience and I wanted to share it with all of you.
