Latest from Larry J. Sabatos Crystal Ball looks at Dems reliance on young voters and how it will hurt them during the midterms, when older voters are more likely to turn out. Just going by my anecdotal experience, Id suggest another issue: Lots of my friends in the so-called Millenial generation support Dems social policies, but Republicans economic policies. And Dems lean heavily on that social liberalism to get support. But one thing I heard over and over from my friends was that while they dont support - and in some cases, detest - the GOPs social policies, they voted R anyway because their priority was the economy. Its enormously frustrating to be treated as though we can be won simply on social issues - this is something I fight as a young woman, especially. Im not too stupid to understand economic policy. Yes, it can be complicated, but thats your JOB as a politician to be able to articulate your policy proposals in a way that a layperson can understand. So until the Democrats stop relying (lazily) on their social record in order to get young voters, they are going to continue to use a substantial amount of that demographic that doesnt even like the person they end up voting for!
