Just going by my anecdotal experience, Id suggest another issue: Lots of my friends in the so-called Millenial generation support Dems social policies, but Republicans economic policies. And Dems lean heavily on that social liberalism to get support. But one thing I heard over and over from my friends was that while they dont support - and in some cases, detest - the GOPs social policies, they voted R anyway because their priority was the economy. Its enormously frustrating to be treated as though we can be won simply on social issues - this is something I fight as a young woman, especially. Im not too stupid to understand economic policy. Yes, it can be complicated, but thats your JOB as a politician to be able to articulate your policy proposals in a way that a layperson can understand. So until the Democrats stop relying (lazily) on their social record in order to get young voters, they are going to continue to use a substantial amount of that demographic that doesnt even like the person they end up voting for!
