Latest update from Forest Service at 10:00 pm Rim Fire August 21, 2013, 10:00 pm Stanislaus National Forest Location: Clavey and Tuolumne River Canyons; Date Started: August 17, 2013, Groveland Ranger District, Stanislaus National Forest Percent Contained: 5% Cause: Under Investigation Acres Burned: 16,228+ Injuries:0 Resources: Hand crews 15 Engines 30 Helicopters 7Fixed Wing unknown Water Tenders 17Dozers 19 Total personnel assigned to fire: 1080 Summary: Fire grew in all division except the southwest area near Hwy 120. Fire continues to spot over Ferretti Road and direct suppression methods were successful. Firing operations have begun on Ferretti Rd. as the fire progressed west towards the community of Pine Mountain Lake. The fire continues northwest spread and is burning past Butcher Knife Ridge and is moving into the Grapevine Creek. The Rim Fire continues to move northeast up the Tuolumne River drainage from Gravel Range past Jones Point Lookout up to Early Intake. Firing operations were successful east of the ICP. The southeast edge continues to spread along Hwy 120 to the east and is following Pilot Ridge to the southeast. Direct line suppression efforts impeded by difficult access, steep inaccessible terrain and active fire behavior raise safety concerns for crews adjacent to the fires edge. Smoke exposure tithing the deep drainages will be an issue for crew. Fire burned over Cherry Lake Rd. and past the Incident Command Post today. Aircraft dumped retardant over Camp Tawonga causing the fire to burn around the camp. Fire management moved into a Unified Command after the fire reach CAL Fire jurisdiction. Incident Commander David Cooper and the South Central Sierra Interagency Type 2 Incident Management Team will continue to manage the fire until the Region 8 Type 1 Team arrives and transition sometime on Friday or Saturday. Road & Trail Closures / Evacuations: An Area Closure is pending. Hwy 120 remains closed from four miles east of Buck Meadows to four miles west of the Groveland Ranger Station. Ferretti Road and Clements to Hwy 120 are closed. Residences of Pine Mountain Lake were among several communities and camps that evacuated today using the reverse 911 calling system. Structure Information: 2 residences and 7 outbuildings. Predicted Weather: There is a red flag warning for lightning today through Wednesday. A change to an inversion weather pattern over the next few days may help to slow the spread of the fire.
