League Sponsored Panel Looks at Poverty in the County The public is invited to attend a forum focused on the extent and effects of poverty in Winnebago County sponsored by the League of Women Voters. It will be held on Monday, October 21 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Coughlin Center, 625 East County Road Y in Oshkosh. Over a year ago the League began an initiative to research the scope and prevalence of poverty in our county. Some questions explored were: Who are the poor? Where do they live? What are their circumstances? and What resources are available to them? Did you know that in Winnebago County 1 out of 5 children live in households that are at or below the federal poverty level? Of all the children attending public schools more than 4 out of 10 receive free or reduced lunch. These families are your neighbors. The League will share some of the significant research findings. Also there will be speakers from the area who will address how poverty relates to three basic human needs - food, shelter and health. The speakers are Chris Kniep, Family Living Educator, Winnebago County UW Extension; Susan Van Houwelingen, Deputy Director of the Oshkosh/Winnebago Housing Authority and Ann Kriegel, Supervisor of Economic Support, Winnebago County Department of Human Services. We hope you will join us. There will be some time for questions from the audience following the presentation. LWV is a non partisan organization of men and women that encourages participation in government and discussion about major public policy issues.
