Learned a new word today. Jo-Ann Waugh Lyndaker and I interviewed - TopicsExpress

Learned a new word today. Jo-Ann Waugh Lyndaker and I interviewed an elderly Croghan couple (Julius and Avis Moser) about surviving the Great Depression in Lewis County. This is for an article we are creating for the Lewis County Historical Society Annual Journal. The word was a German word referring to a separate house or apartment connected to the main house, where elderly relatives would live. Thus maintaining their autonomy, but still having family to look in on them. Julius and Avis called it a dowdy house. Not sure of the spelling! Does anyone know of this term and the correct way to spell it? We learned so much from these two. It was such a joy to listen! Thank you Jo-Ann, for making it happen!
