Learned lesson from Hyderpora attack: GOCoc 15 C corps ‘ Army Focusing On Intelligence’ ╚►Srinagar, General Officer Commanding 15 Corps, Lt General Gurmit Singh Wednesday said that Army learnt a lesson from June 24 militant attack in Hyderpora area of Srinagar in which eight soldiers werekilled. Addressing his first press conference here after taking over as GOC Chinar Corps on June 11, Gen Gurmit said, “ We learnt a lesson from Hyderpora convoy attack. It was an unfortunate incident and at the same time we arehappy that our soldiers exercised maximum restraint. They did not open fire and there was no collateral damage. You would appreciate.” When asked whether the attack was due to any security lapse, Gen Gurmit said that there are some standard operating procedures and they have been identified. “ We are trying to focus on certain areas from intelligence point of view,” he said. The General however said that overallsecurity situation in Kashmir was under control. On infiltration, he said that training camps of militants and launching pads were active in Pakistan Administered Kashmir. “ We have a very effective intelligence grid in place. There is lot of synergy between different agencies. We will take on the challenge,” he said, adding that alert troops at the Line of Control ( LoC) would not allow the militants to sneak in. Gen Gurmit said that it was because of alertness of soldiers at the LoC that five heavily armed militants were killed in Keran Sector ofGKNN north Kashmir’s Kupwara district Monday evening. “ I am proud and congratulate troops for doing this commendable job,” he said. The Corps Commander said that people ofKashmir were helping the forces in intelligence gathering. “ JK Police has also excellent intelligence network and they are doing extremely good job,” he said, adding that all security agencies operating in Kashmir were having excellent synergy. Gen Gurmit denied disclosing the number of militants active in Kashmir. “ We must give importance to have intelligence about the intentions, capability and plans of themilitants. Monday’s Keran encounter is an indication of synergized intelligence grid to tackle the things effectively,” he said. On Sumbal incident in which two youth were killed in army firing, he said, “ I reiterate that this was a joint operation with police. Court of inquiry into the incident is going on. My heart goes to the families of the bereaved.” He refused to comment further on the killings. On AFSPA revocation, the General said, “ We have given our recommendations to our higher authorities.” Asked what would be the role of Army in coming elections, Gen Gurmit said, “ Army is apolitical and it is people’s Army.” Gen Gurmit asked the youth of Kashmir to study and work hard for excellence. “ I on behalf of Army Chief and GOC- in- Chief Northern Command congratulate people on auspicious occasion of Ramadhan. I appeal themto pray for peace and prosperity of the State,” he said. Earlier, around 500 recruits were inducted as soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry ( JAKLI) with Gen Gurmit chairing the function.
