Left us on this day (Jan. 11) in 2005: James Griffin (cancer, age 61), best remembered as a singer, songwriter & guitarist with hit 70s soft rock group, Bread; although James was a significant contributor to the groups albums as a writer & singer, every one of their 13 songs that made the US singles chart was written & sung by bandmate David Gates, a situation that created friction between the two (splits, arguments & legal battles, followed eventually by reconciliation & a Bread reunion tour in 1996-97); James won an Academy Award for Best Song in 1970 as co-writer of The Carpenters hit version of For All We Know; he released several solo albums, teamed with Terry Sylvester (formerly of The Hollies) on the album Griffin & Sylvester in 1982 & was a member of Black Tie with Randy Meisner & Billy Swan...(this clip, James sings one of his most accomplished Bread compositions...)
