Left us on this day (Oct. 12) in 2009: Dickie Peterson (liver cancer, age 63), best remembered as the founding bassist & lead vocalist for San Francisco-based, psych-blues-rock power trio, Blue Cheer; many consider them to be the first heavy metal group, with their heavy electric blues version of Eddie Cochran’s Summertime Blues (1968 US #15), serving as the very first heavy metal song; they released such scorching albums as Vincebus Eruptum (1968), New! Improved! Blue Cheer (1969) & Blue Cheer (1969); the band remained a unit, through various configurations, into the ’90s, with Dickie being a constant figure; they parted ways in 1994 & reunited in 1999, carrying on right up to his passing; Dickie also recorded two solo albums, Child of the Darkness (1998) & Tramp (1999)…
